Twenty-one vivid, moving essays on caesarean birth

“No one talks about C-sections as surgery,” writes SooJin Pate. “They talk about it as if it’s just another way—albeit more convenient way—of giving birth.” The twenty-one essays in My Caesarean add back to the conversation the missing voices of a vast, invisible sisterhood.

Robin Schoenthaler reflects “A C-section for us meant life.” And yet, women who don’t give birth vaginally—by choice or necessity—often feel stigmatized. “My son’s birth was not a test I needed to pass,” writes Sara Bates. “As if growing a human inside another human for nine months then caring for it the rest of its life isn’t enough,” adds Mary Pan, herself a physician.

Alongside their personal stories, the writers—decorated novelists, poets, and essayists—address the history of the C-section as well as its risks, social inequities, impact on the body, and psychological aftermath. My Caesarean is a heartfelt meditation, offering much-needed comfort through shared experience.

Contributors include Catherine Newman, Judy Batalion, Nicole Cooley, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Lisa Solod, Misty Urban, Jacinda Townsend, Mary Pan, Robin Schoenthaler, Elizabeth Noll, Jen Fitzgerald, Tyrese Coleman, SooJin Pate, Daniela Montoya-Barthelemy, Cameron Dezen Hammon, LaToya Jordan, Sara Bates, Susan Hoffmann, and Alicia Jo Rabins.

Fine-tune your awareness with sacred geometry and enter the realm of multidimensionality.

Plato referred to sacred geometry as the language of the soul. For thousands of years, sacred geometry has been a part of every culture. It is the bond that connects us all to the cosmos; it is the true design of our soul. Sacred geometry is the blueprint of creation at the core of all form even at the core of you.

Quantum artist LON has created 44 Activations that encourage your analytical mind to step aside so you can enter the domain of the subconscious and the soul, and connect to the quantum field the space of infinite potential. Working with these cards on a daily basis will help you to think outside the box, create a deeper sense of peace in your life, and become a powerful conscious creator.

Sacred Geometry Activations Oracle Lon Art 9781582706351 Books Reviews

  • Powerful cards, gorgeous color. I bought a different set of Sacred Geometry cards a few months ago; I wish I could return them. They do not have the visceral effect of Lon's cards. Some of the reviews of these cards complained about the card stock quality. In my view, these cards are not meant to be shuffled like a conventional playing deck. While everyone must find the method that works best for him/her, I pull from the deck. These are quite large, and do not lend themselves to shuffling no matter how heavy the card stock would be. As these cards depict sacred symbols, they must be approached reverentially. When I have a new deck of cards, the first question I ask is what the deck will mean to me. With Tarot decks, I do shuffle, and I consider whichever card falls from the deck as my answer. This approach has been successful. With Lon's deck, I spread the whole deck out and chose a card. The card I chose was #17...Consciousness, which "supports our ability to focus our attention on all the multidimensional aspects..." This perfectly describes the path I have been on. Then I just kept pulling and re-ordering the cards as they wished to reveal themselves to me. As I reviewed the cards in their new order, they told a story. I think with any deck of cards, a person must be willing to let the self slide away and allow the cards to hold sway. I decided I will not change the order of these cards until I have spent time meditating with each one and studying them in their current order. This may not be the best approach for everyone, but this was the impression I received from the cards and from the way they fell into place.

The book also impressed me. Not one of those teeny books that often appear in decks with miniscule print that you have to squint to read, but a real book packed with information. I even love the packaging. The box is heavy duty, and designed so the cards nestle in one stack underneath the book.

Buy at least two--one for yourself and one for someone to whom you wish to give the gift of a whole heart. I cannot overstate the impact of these cards. I believe Lon is truly in touch with the metaphysical aspects of the universe. And I'm not an easy believer--more like a constant skeptic about people who claim spiritual ascension.
  • A majority of these illustrations are not actual sacred geometric symbols, but the artists idea of what sacred geometry might look like. I would return them, but refuse to pay $6 for return shipping. If you’d like to work with actual sacred geometric symbols, try the Sacred Geometry Oracle Deck by Francine Hart. Much more accurate.
  • I purchased these oracle cards based solely on the glowing reviews. I have always been fascinated with the subject of sacred symbols and felt that the cards would be a wonderful introduction. After receiving the cards and reading/ following the instructions(i.e. "sacred duality draw"), I used the cards to weigh in on a matter that I was struggling with. None of the draws made any sense. I repeated the step several times and got the same bizarre, unrelated messaging. It was akin to inquiring about a rose and getting feedback on an alligator. I went so far as to reach out to the author, who by the way offers "readings" and other forms of professional assistance. After three (3) consecutive attempts via her website and phone, she never responded. Needless to say, I cannot place any value in a product when the creator of same product cannot find the common courtesy or professional integrity to respond to a simple customer inquiry. Save your money. The "Sacred Geometry Activations" cards cannot be relied upon with any amount of creditability; and the same pretty much can be said of the author, given my experience.
  • Great cards, love the sacred geometry in these cards. Use them for daily focus and to receive or release energy that's needed.
  • This is the most amazing oracle deck I've ever seen. The messages are so powerful and REAL. This is a deck that has supreme guidance and the love and radiance of the artist, Lon shines through them! Get these for your anyone you love to see rise to their highest self and watch as they sky rocket! <3
  • Very cool cards. I'm a beginner-I've never owned any oracle or tarot cards in my life. I love sacred geometry so I thought this would be cool. I love the fact that it comes with a small booklet to explain each card in detail. I imagine these cards would also be enjoyed by novices too. They hold very very deep meaning. If you take the time to learn all of them in great detail (which I plan to do) I believe you can get a lot out of them and very detailed readings. Or if you just want to have fun with them without going crazy into learning every little detail of them, you can do that too. They work both ways which is great.
  • The cards clearly vibrate with each frequency, which makes reading them an easy, insightful, and inspiring experience.
  • This review is based on first impression. I have just received them and not worked with them yet. Just out of the box, I was impressed by the packaging, the guide book and how the cards are stored in the box. Immediately the first card when I turned them face up was the Root Chakra and I was impressed by that. I love the colors and the shapes on the cards. Right now, the only, but really big downside is the weight of the cards, they felt flimsy. I started to look at each card individually and realized that they were stuck together. As I separated them and then felt each card, they are VERY flimsy compared to the other four decks that I have; two by Diane Virtue, one is the Shamanic Healing Oracle deck and the other is the Keepers of the Light. I will work with them and write a review based on that. I hope they prove to be good because I was really excited about getting these!

I have done two readings now. I love the messages and both readings were spot on. However, I am not going to raise the stars as much as I would love to because they are just too flimsy. As I was shuffling the deck the cards were bending on me. They are very hard to handle! Hopefully they will reconsider the card stock and remake them. If so, I would love it if they gave those of us who have purchased these a free deck.

Ebook Verity edition by Colleen Hoover Romance eBooks

"I don't even really know where to start with this one. I will say this. Any author that can branch out from her normal genre of romance and write something like this and make it work, well not only make it work but make it one of her best written novels, says tremendous things about them. This book says so much about Hoover's talent and brilliance as a writer. Cue all the new readers!

Guys, I won't lie. I got truly creeped out at times with this one. The way this book was written truly brought out a side of Hoover I never thought possible. I don't know how many times I asked myself if she was possessed while writing this one.

The POV of this book was interesting. I thought going in you would see things from Verity's POV but like most of this book my theory was thrown out the window as soon as I started. But it worked. It was beyond fascinating seeing Verity from the POV we did and written any other way I don't think this book would have been what it is and that would have been disappointing.

Throw all your theories out the window right now. At times some things were predictable but the plot twists and that ending came out of nowhere and in such a delectable way. Just sit back and be prepared for your heart to race and your mind to run with possibilities.

Bravo Hoover. I only hope we get to see more of this side of you in the future."

  • Well, well, well... Mrs. Hoover is taking a dive into the dark side. I cannot say I am disappointed. If you follow my reviews, you know I prefer the dark and twisted books. They are my happy place.

I had no clue what this book was about when I started it. I rarely read a book's synopsis, but I never read them for Hoover's books. Judging by the cover, I assumed it was going to be a darker story, I just didn't have a clue of what I was getting into.

This haunting, disturbing tale left me feeling bereft. Of what, I am not sure. I just felt unsettled. A little unsure of my own sanity. And maybe a little unsettled over Hoover's sanity too.

This book is not a typical book for Colleen. The characters and their actions are nothing like she has written before. For her to have switched gears in such a dramatic way, and yet still get inside these characters heads in such a realistic way shows just how talented of a writer she is. Not that we didn't already know that. This book just further proves it.

I always say not every book is for every person. Not all of Colleen's books have been for me. However, this one definitely was. And it may not be one for everyone who is a devoted fan of hers. Just know that there is not one bit of unicorns or rainbows in this book.
  • I don't know how to write a review for this book. I'm underwhelmed and feeling blank.
I have never liked one of this author's books, sappy romance isn't my thing, so I haven't read anything by her in years. But when I saw Tarryn Fisher had promoted it and called it dark and twisty, I was exited. I enjoy a dark and twisty book, but I like smart books. Hitchcock is a favorite of mine.
This is not quite that. And leaving the ending open, felt rushed.
Sort of like she got down to the wire, and didn't have time to finish it. Or she wrote the book without knowing what the ending would be.
I know she has a large fan club who always leave her glowing reviews, but if you are looking for a review from someone who loves this specific genre and doesn't leave fan reviews, read the Sugar and Spice review. It's a very honest three star review. I had seen it, I discounted it. I wish I hadn't. I'm finished the book and left with a meh taste in my mouth. Underwhelmed for the cost. I might have paid 0.99 for the book had I listened to the three star and less reviews. But I paid full price and it just wasn't worth it. I had to force myself to finish after the halfway mark.
Great idea for a novel, but maybe better written by someone who enjoys the genre more. I hate to say stay in your lane to anyone, but clearly she has a large crowd of adoring fans for a reason. Perhaps romance is better for her.
  • ** THIS REVIEW IS FULL OF SPOILERS **

1 1/2 TO 2 stars for premise and So Be It. Other than that, this book is a mess. There are so many holes in this.

A mystery/thriller is only as good as the crumbs it leaves behind and this has almost no crumbs at all. We are simply told "this is what happened" and then it ends with "or is it". Literally ends with "or is it", like some campfire ghost story.

    I have lots of questions.

    1. The meeting - Was Jeremy faking no knowing her the first time they met? He says later in the book that he had read her book and that's why he recommended her. Wouldn't he have more research than that? I know I'd have asked for a picture and bio from the publishers.

    2. Verity's mental capacity - The doctors say that she has the mind of a child. That is proven with an EEG. If she really has the mental capacity of a child, then how does she carry out such an elaborate plan? Also, people have natural survival reflexes. How does Verity avoid even the slightest flinch for so long?

    3. The Nurse - Verity admits to leaving the bed to search the house for the manuscript while Jeremy is out. This means the nurse was on watch and she didn't catch Verity? Was she in on Verity's scheme?

    4. The romance(?) - When did Lowen and Jeremy fall in love? Seriously, she was there for a total of 2 minutes and then bam, a few awkward conversations later she's pregnant and they're in love. What? (insert Jackie Chan meme here)

    5. The checking account - Verity opened a checking account online. What address and name did she use for her account? You have to provide those for verification purposes. Banks are very strict about that stuff. If she provided her real name, the police would be able to track her. There is no " I'll call you someday and I'll tell you where to find this letter."

    6. Verity's end - Jeremy murders Verity after finding out the truth. Many things wrong with it that are obvious if you've watched even a few hours of 48 Hours. An investigation would take place. There would be signs of struggle which would come off as strange considering the woman can't move. Also, wouldn't it be odd that the writer's husband is having a baby with writer's replacement almost exactly 9 months after Verity's "accidental death"?

    7. The kid - Crew is put into therapy. Wouldn't he spill the beans about his mom pretending to be her semi coma? He kept spilling the beans about it to Lowen and Jeremy, so why wouldn't he have told the police (he would have been questioned during the investigation) or his therapist?

    8. 9. The Jeremy theory - He planted everything for Lowen to find and it all just conveniently worked out in his favor (including how police handle deaths) and that she magically did everything he wanted her to do so that he can live happily ever after. The theory only works if you're willing to question nothing and accept everything no matter how little sense it actually makes.

Why Is It Always About You? The Seven Deadly Sins of Narcissism Audible Audio Edition Sandy Hotchkiss James F Masterson MD foreword Amanda Carlin Simon Schuster Audio Books Reviews

  • First off, there are some very good insights into why narcs do what they do. However, she continuously makes the erroneous assumption that they don't *realize* what they are doing. Not true. They know exactly what they are doing. It's intentional. Read "In Sheep's Clothing" by George Simon Jr to get a much more accurate understanding of what is happening behind the mask.

Also, in the chapter about the aging narc, she doesn't emphasize the most important consideration. Going "no contact" should be very seriously considered by all of us ACONs (Adult Children of Narcissists), rather than allowing the guilt and manipulation to convince us to stick around and be abused. She suggests lying to ourselves and calling criticism "help" to make ourselves feel better about being abused. ???? No. Go "No Contact" as soon as you possibly can. For yourself, for your children, for society in general.

Finally, having been raised by two people who consider me to have no value beyond what they can get out of me, I strongly disagree with her views on self-esteem. She doesn't have the experience or understanding to "get" that a child of a narc (or 2 narcs) NEEDS to learn to value themselves regardless of our successes and performance. She believes that if a person succeeds in things, they will develop self-esteem. No. I have succeeded in many things over the years, with flying colors. I feel capable in those areas, but in no way did my self-esteem increase. My sense of value is only now increasing by basing my worth and value on the fact that I am a human being, lovingly created by God. I am not values for what I give and do, but for just being me. If you are a narc survivor, don't buy into the nonsense that doing more and doing it better will give you value or self-esteem. You are valuable just the way you are.
  • I was trying to understand the troubles in my family and found About You? among a list of similar books. So I bought the lot of them. Their messages were similar but some just didn't strike home if that makes sense. This book not only did strike home but was very clear in its writing which made it easy to absorb the, sometimes, tough messages inside. While reading it I felt relief at times with a new understanding of the situation growing with such a parent. This book not only helps you understand the behaviors but also gives you the tools to make a difference in your life tomorrow. That is the real strength. New Ideas on coping.
  • This book has been instrumental in helping me heal through the trauma and pain from "co-parenting" with a Narcissist. I've felt so helpless the last five years, and after reading this book, I've gained an entirely new perspective on how Narcissists' brains work, why they act the way they do, and how I can cope with our volatile, forced relationship. This book is perfect for those who are forced to have relationships with Narcissists, such as a co-parent.
  • I went through various emotions when reading this book. First, it was a kind of comfort, because it described very accurately traits i feel like I'm encountering more and more the older I get. There's something comforting about having a name for a phenomenon and also about knowing that I'm not the only one observing it.

Second, it was a kind of unease, as I realized I had symptoms of both an enabler as well as of a narcissist (apparently many have at least a few symptoms of narcissism, but actual full-blown "narcissistic personality disorder" is somewhat rare), although there were excellent practical suggestions as to how to overcome them (as well as, interestingly, for how to coexist with narcissists).

Third, it was a kind of fascination--i was basically shocked at how parenting during the first 36 months of a child's life can affect how emotionally/mentally healthy and capable a person can be at age 30. I now want to study more about early child development. Seriously shocking--even more surprising is how many seemingly healthy kids come out of families not necessarily educated about this development period.

Fourth, i was (am) bound by a desperate question is it possible for someone with strong narcissistic tendencies to recover? I.E. is there hope!? If not, this may be one of the most depressing books I've read, as an American (where narcissism has been steadily on the rise). I'm desperate to know this answer, and have done research to try to find the authors email address to ask her!

One additional note I deducted one star because, towards the end, the author vaguely draws a link between the decline of the prevalence of monotheistic "traditional" religion in American culture and the rise of narcissism, but does not provide sufficient (or any, really) argument for this link, nor does she provide reasonable cause to believe that a return to such religion would put narcissism on the decline (nor am I persuaded that is even her argument). As a direct result of this passage, her credibility took a big hit in my mind; thank goodness it was towards the end, and thank goodness the rest of it made so much sense. However, I now feel like I need to read more to validate what I learned in this book.

    (My Goodreads review https//www.goodreads.com/review/show/1045305037?book_show_action=false)

The New York Yankees of the 1950s Mantle Stengel Berra and a Decade of Dominance David Fischer 9781493038923 Books Reviews

  • This book on the Yankees of the 1950s provides the reader with a matter-of-fact account on the team's dominance during this decade. The reader will also be provided with tidbits of information that took place in the world of other sports and America during this decade. Having been fortunate to have been a baseball fan (of the Tigers) during this decade since 1951 the names and incidents that took place in baseball and America were very memorable to me.

However, if you are looking for a story of the decade with an emphasis on the Yankees you won't find it here. Instead you will be treated to a summary of the decade and the players that were on the Yankees' team. I realize that baseball fans are big on statistics but I'm not. Along with statistics and game play-by-play may be fine for some fans but it is not for me. If you like this, then fine, you won't be bothered by this. An interesting bit of trivia you may want to file away is that Johnny Sain was the last pitcher to pitch to Babe Ruth and the first one to pitch to Jackie Robinson.

I found an error on page 105 in which the author states that both runners held their base when Willie Mays made his famous catch off of Vic Wertz whereas, in reality, Larry Doby, the runner on second, was able to tag up and move on to third base. Also, a photo on page 12 is listed as Vic Raschi, Hank Bauer, and Casey Stengel. I'm not sure of the identification of Raschi is correct. It looks like Gene Woodling to me. Besides it would seem more appropriate for it to be Woodling since Stengel platooned both Woodling and Bauer.

I found the book to be an okay read and if you grew up in the 1950s you may find this to be an interesting read. If not, and you want to familiarize yourself with this decade with an emphasis on the Yankees you may enjoy it more.
  • The book captured the spirit of the Yankees and was a honest appraisal of the players on and off the field. It would have an appeal for someone who lived through that era. I doubt that younger readers would enjoy the book as much.
  • Best baseball book I have ever read and I have been reading them for fifty years. In addition to chronicling the achievements of these great teams and players, the author interweaves short accounts of important 1950s US social, political and cultural events that provide important perspective and context for those who did not experience the time first hand, which is of course, going to be most of the people who read this book. For those of us that were there, there are some pointed reminders of the good, the bad and the wacky and the irretrievably lost. But also there are the memories that will, at least temporarily, supplant the worst of today. Character portraits of the Yankee players, manager Casey Stengel and general manager George Weiss are detailed, warts and all, but Fischer is neither adoring nor muck racking in his portrayals of these personalities, some of them very controversial in their time, He relates the events as they occurred and I found myself drawing my own conclusions and never battling the presenter's bias as one must do with the chroniclers of today's culture. Fischer does not attempt to compare 1950s baseball to the current game and I think this is to his credit. His text is rich enough for a reader of any age to discern the basic similarities and the glaring differences between an era long gone and the giant marketing scam that the game has become today. 1950s Yankee great Mickey Mantle once said, "After I hit a home run, I had a habit of running with my head down. I figured the pitcher already felt bad enough without me showing him up rounding the bases." Filed under the arcane concept 'sportsmanship'. So I enjoyed reading about the Yogis, Caseys and Bauers and can easily wait for March when baseball talk turns to silly beards, hairdos and launch angles and the "action" consists of strikeouts, lazy pop flies and the occasional home run. Today, I eagerly anticipate telecasts of Curling - it is more of a team sport, more competitive and often more entertaining. But no nursery school dances or running around mouth open like a demented maniac. Hell, you'd slip on the ice. With clear, concise, non-pretentious prose, Fischer has not only created an important sports document, but an admirable work that any non-fiction author would be proud of. A marvelous read for all ages.
  • During the decade of the 1950’s, the New York Yankees had an incredible run of success. They won the World Series for the first four years of the decade as part of a streak of five consecutive championship seasons. Then they followed up with four more American League pennants and two more World Series championships in 1956 and 1958. This amazing decade of baseball in the Bronx is the subject of this book by David Fischer.

Using numerous sources for his research such as newspaper articles and other books, Fischer relives each year of Yankees baseball and shares some anecdotes about the star players. These include players whose careers peaked earlier and ended in the 1950’s (Joe DiMaggio), those who began play in the 1950’s and continued (Mickey Mantle) or those who just began later in the decade (Elston Howard). While the writing is not greatly detailed or insightful, a reader will learn much about the players and manager Casey Stengel.

As like any other book that describes a team or athlete during a certain time frame, this book will make references to important social or political events during that time. The topics are varied, such as television, cars, civil rights and President Eisenhower. Sometimes these are smoothly woven into the baseball text and at other times, they seem to be added simply because they occurred during the year that the exploits of the Yankees are currently being discussed.

If a reader is a very knowledgeable, well-versed Yankee fan or historian, then he or she may already know about most of the material in this book. If the reader is a casual fan or is just interested in learning why New York was the dominant baseball team of the 1950’s then this book is for them.

I wish to thank Lyons Press for providing a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

All the Lives We Ever Lived Seeking Solace in Virginia Woolf Audible Audio Edition Katharine Smyth Brittany Pressley Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • All the Lives We Ever Lived is a difficult but rewarding book. One difficulty is it assumes a familiarity with Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. I, like the author, love this book but it is not part of a standard American curricula. Another difficulty is its telling of the story of the passing of the author’s father. An unflinching look at death is, for better or for worse, rare in our culture. Finally, the book is not in the typical memoir genre. The author’s encounter with human mortality provides commentary on Woolf while Woolf helps her understand her own experiences. In other words, the book doesn’t engage in traditional literary criticism.

It is, however, a unique account and perspective. The author writes so hauntingly of dying that I had to put the book down sometimes lest I fell into depression. The writing is at the same time so fluid, so beautiful in itself, that one wants to keep turning and turning the page.

The questions the author deals with sound banal when not instantiated in real life. Why is nature so unfeeling? Does everything we love end in entropic nothingness? How do we best mourn our loved ones? Can secular humanity find any solace when confronted with death or is it merely one long bleak dance with winter?

While both Woolf’s and the author’s experiences were harrowing, Smyth does find in Woolf some solace. She sees the unique striving for life embedded in the human heart as continuing, stripped of all individuality, from generation to generation. While memory fades and even the ephemera of our dwellings and belongings recede into not, that inchoate love of all things human does not die a second death but is passed on to our descendants. Banal in the recounting, one must read the book to get the full effect.

I would recommend this book to everyone but the author’s choice of assuming basic knowledge of To the Lighthouse makes me think that only devotees of Woolf, or at least those familiar with her, will find the book as captivating as I did. Even so, maybe this book will persuade some non-devotees to read To the Lighthouse. Woolf’s heart beats on.
  • "All the Lives We Ever Lived" feels like a new kind of book—one that uses great art, Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse," as a lens to view more clearly the author's own loss, and ends up becoming a shelter itself for our losses as readers.

We learn about the author's father, who was a larger-than-life figure (similar to Mrs. Ramsey in "To the Lighthouse") but battled with alcoholism and ultimately succumbed to cancer. The prose is elegant and precise, filled with insights that forced me to pause, put down the page, and consider my own relationships.

Really powerful stuff. I hadn't read "To the Lighthouse" before reading "All the Lives" but that didn't impact my understanding. It actually inspired me to pick up Woolf's book.

Highly recommend "All the Lives" for readers looking for a beautiful read that asks the big questions how can we even attempt to understand the loss of our favorite people, how can we come to terms with who those people really were, do we even want to know?
  • All the lives we ever lived will not find a home on my library shelves. It reads like a Ph.D thesis, including some ten words I did not know existed in the English language (capuscular, for example) and another several that I had never spoken or needed to express myself, such as evanescent. I am certain the examining Board would be impressed.

The mourning, which she correctly reminds us is done by one and all of us at some time, continues tiresomely, long after the point is made. She is brilliant but can be boring and tedious.
  • I was really taken by this book, which caught me by surprise. I wanted to read it mostly out of clinical interest to how she would work a modern story around Virginia Woolf. I had never read Woolf's "Lighthouse" book, so I wasn't expecting to be that connected either way.

But her story about her father, and reflections on how her father confronted disappointments and compromises was very affecting. Her father was not that old - 59 - and that's sure not as old as it used to be. A lot of the things she describes her father living through are a lot more relevant to me than they would have been a few years back. On the other hand, she's also writing about saying goodbye to a parent and that's something else that becomes more concrete and less abstract with age.

I wasn't always excited about the Woolf digressions - because I'm not familiar with the book - but I could follow the connections she made. A few hit home - she relates how Woolf's characters go to a childhood home and stand outside. The feeling is of being a ghost - a shade from the past lurking at the doorstop, but never coming in. I've been that person too.

I'm hesitant to give five stars, because the Woolf sections do require SOME knowledge for the most appreciation, which I didn't have. But the personal stories were all very affecting in a way that never drooped into mid-age ennui.

Any audience of middle age adults will 'enjoy' the reckoning that Smyth is both experiencing and capturing. A fan of Woolf will no doubt appreciate these links. All in all, very, very good.

An evidence-based guide to using cannabis to enhance pain relief safely, effectively, and economically while reducing the risks of opioid addiction.

Opioid addiction has exploded to epidemic proportions in the US. Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death. In 2012, 259 million prescriptions were written for opioids - more than enough to give every American adult his or her own bottle of pills.

Uwe Blesching, author of The Cannabis Health Index, clearly and thoroughly lays out the overwhelming benefits of using cannabis - not only to reduce the nation's dependence on opioids - but also to manage the craving and withdrawal symptoms of opioid addiction, and especially to address the pain that leads to drug use and addiction in the first place.

Citing statistics showing that states allowing legal access to cannabis have seen a 25 percent drop in opioid-related deaths, Blesching explains how precision applications of cannabis can alleviate the mental and emotional aspects of pain by modulating numerous neurotransmitters and their emotional counterparts. He presents a convincing case for the powerful benefits of cannabis in reducing the risks of addiction and overdose, cutting monetary costs, and restoring a sense of balance and control to those who struggle with pain.

"I very rarely give 5 star reviews to any book, and while this book might not be the perfect book in the literal sense, it is so needed in today's day and age that I had to give it five stars. The information is invaluable. Books like these is why I think all states should legalize commercial sales of marijuana. In Florida it's legal for medical purposes but doctor's fees are an arm and a leg and I don't know of a single insurance that will cover it and prices are ridiculous. If it were available commercially (for recreation) people would be able to manage their own pain without having to turn to drugs like oxycodone.

I was first prescribed oxycodone over a decade ago, after I was trampled by a horse I was training. I had severe soft tissue damage and a leg that was broken in half and needed surgery with a plate and pins. That was my first encounter with this medication. About two years later I developed severe arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, and ankylosing spondylitis. My doctors' answers were to put me on oxycodone long term. Again, about a decade ago. At this time I was living in the Chicago area where it was never a problem filling my scripts, but I was experiencing side effects. I was emotionally numb. My sex drive had gone away completely. I didn't feel much pain but I didn't feel much of anything. As time went on doses increased. I moved to Florida where a doctor decided to put me on Fentanyl instead of oxycodone. Then I changed doctors because I didn't like his staff and that doctor decided buprenorphine which did absolutely nothing for my pain but gave me bad side effects. The genius doctors then decided to put me on oxyodone again with dilauded for breakthrough pain. At this point I was taking 180 mg of oxycodone a day plus dilauded for breakthrough pain. Mind you, I was told I would never become addicted to oxycodone if I took it as prescribed. I pointed this out when I had gone two days without my medications and got very sick and my doctor said I wasn't addicted. I was opiate dependent. Sorry, to me it's all the same thing. If I can't take a medication and not take it for a couple of days without experiencing hellish withdrawals, I fell that's addiction and I wanted nothing to do with it. I told him to wean me off. He refused. I finally found a wonderful doctor who was willing to help wean me off of the opiates. It took a year, and it was hell, but today I don't take any type of opiate medication at all. I WISH I had this book when I was going through that. It would have saved me a lot of pain and suffering. The good news is that this book helped me realize I don't have to suffer and live in pain just because I don't want to be on opiates. Marijuana is a good alternative. The book was so informative and factual in an easy to understand manner, I am actually making an appointment to get the medical card since I have a number of conditions that qualify me for it.

If you're addicted to opiates, know anyone who is, need pain relief and don't want that horrid addiction or the side effects, I'd recommend this book to anyone. It is so informative and helpful and helps you truly understand the nature of what is going on, why it is happening, and what you can do about it. I applaud the author for taking on the challenge of this book. Very well done."

  • A well written and timely analysis of two important health issues of the day the opioid crisis and cannabis revolution.
Thanks to Dr. Blesching for writing this in the spirit of self empowerment.

It is so informative and helpful and helps you truly understand the nature of what is going on, why it is happening, and what you can do about it. I applaud the author for taking on the challenge of this book. Very well done.
  • First of all I have to commend the author for doing an excellent job of engaging the reader. The research was done and the book thoroughly details the points to argue a very challenging topic. Opioid Addiction is a huge problem and while there have been many suggestions to reduce the problem, there really hasn't been a suggestion that dramatically reduces the problem. This book falls into that category also. The most common suggestion seems to always fall on another medication, drug, or "coping skill." Methadone has helped some. Suboxone has been somewhat effective. Vivitrol and Naltrexone seems to be helping. Non addictive or less addictive substances have had minimal success for pain and may have even resulted in people finding new medications to abuse. This book really didn't convince me that Cannabis would be any more effective than any of the other suggestions so far. Frankly, we look for a quick fix and never really get to the root of the problem. We continue to feed the addictive mentality by seeking the fix in another substance. We need to move away from substances and find out what is driving the mentality to have a substance to fix our uncomfortable feelings. I am not criticizing this authors work because I felt this book was very well written and thought provoking. In fact, I highly recommend everyone get this book and read it simply to think outside of the box.
  • This book accurately and effectively shares a research based, medical approach for treating The Opioid Crisis. It was refreshing to read something direct and thoroughly, properly researched. Bleshing's writing style is well thought out and intelligent. He offers an integrative medicinal approach for a problem that so many people are struggling with... Overall, the issues with opioids need to be managed better. Treatment centers need to be created in regions where its hardest hit by the epidemic. We should recognize the potential role of medical marijuana in helping ease people off opioids. Lastly, we need to find a more humane approach to addiction as a whole. All of these programs could easily be funded with tax revenues from marijuana legalization. Bleshing has written a great solution to help us reduce the risks of addiction.
  • I found this book to be a detailed overview on the topic of opioid addiction. It features chapters on the history of the opioid crisis, the science of opioids, cannabis and pain, contrasting cannabis and opioids in pain management, opioid withdrawal, the endocannabinoid system, determining vulnerabilities to addiction and developing one's defenses, and rethinking the idea of euphoria being a side effect. Despite being brief (only about two hundred pages), I found this book to be informative, and with a scientific/academic tone to it. There's a long bibliography featured at the end, so it's also clear that it's been well-researched. Opioid abuse is a popular problem that has been covered in depth by the mass media for a while now, without being fully explained. This book was rather good in shining a light on it.
